Non-Emergency Medical Transportation

NEMT & Ambulette Insurance
for Medical Transport Operators

Wheelchair van, stretcher van, and ambulatory transport operators have different exposures than freight carriers. We help NEMT companies build a program that satisfies Medicaid, managed-care, and transportation-broker contract requirements.

Who This Page Is For

We Work With Medical Transport Operators

NEMT is passenger transport, not freight, and carriers underwrite it separately from general trucking. Whether you run one van or a small fleet, we can help you review coverage and market your account.

Wheelchair Van Operators

Lift- or ramp-equipped vans transporting seated wheelchair passengers to dialysis, therapy, and routine appointments.

🚑
Stretcher & Ambulette

Non-emergency stretcher transport for patients who cannot sit upright but do not require emergency medical care en route.

🚶
Ambulatory Transport

Sedan and minivan transport for ambulatory members traveling to and from covered medical appointments.

📄
Contracted Providers

Operators running under Medicaid, managed-care organization, or transportation-broker agreements with their own insurance requirements.

Coverage Overview

Coverage We Place for NEMT

What you need depends on your vehicles, your drivers, the states you run in, and the contracts you hold. These are the coverages we place for medical-transport accounts.

Commercial Auto Liability

Covers bodily injury and property damage you cause to others while operating your transport vehicles. This is the core coverage for NEMT and the limit your contracts will scrutinize most closely.

Commonly Needed
🚗
Physical Damage

Comprehensive and collision coverage on your owned vans and vehicles, including lifts and ramps where the carrier will schedule them. If a vehicle is financed, your lender will usually require it.

Commonly Needed
🏢
General Liability

Covers third-party bodily injury and property damage arising away from the vehicle — for example a slip and fall at your dispatch office or during pickup at a facility.

Often Contract-Required
🩹
Workers’ Compensation

Covers work-related injury to your drivers and attendants. Most brokers and state Medicaid programs require it once you have employees, and requirements vary by state.

Often Contract-Required
🚚
Hired & Non-Owned Auto

Picks up liability exposure when a rented vehicle or an employee’s personal vehicle is used for company business. Useful if you supplement your fleet during peak demand.

Situational
📋
Certificates & Additional Insureds

Brokers, managed-care organizations, and facilities generally require a certificate of insurance (COI) naming them, often with additional insured status. We issue certificates as your contracts require.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is NEMT insurance the same as trucking insurance?

No. NEMT is passenger transport rather than freight, so carriers rate and underwrite it separately. Some coverages overlap with trucking, such as auto liability and physical damage, but the appetite and pricing are different.

What limits will my broker contract require?

It varies by broker, state Medicaid program, and managed-care organization. Rather than guess, send us the contract and we will read the insurance requirements section and match the limits it specifies.

Do you cover emergency ambulance operations?

No. This page covers non-emergency transport only. Emergency medical services and 911 response are a separate class of business with different carriers and requirements.

Can you issue a certificate of insurance for my broker?

Yes. Once coverage is bound we issue certificates of insurance (COI) and add additional insureds where your policy and contract allow. Send us the exact wording your broker requires.

Do I need workers’ compensation?

If you have employees, most states require it and most transportation contracts require proof of it. Requirements differ by state and by how your drivers are classified, so tell us how your team is set up.

Which states can you write?

Pinnacle Risk Advisors LLC is licensed in GA, FL, TX, IN, UT, NC and SC. Eligibility and available limits still depend on carrier appetite, vehicle type, and driver history.

Ready to Review Your NEMT Coverage?
